The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has welcomed the formation of the Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers’ Association (SLPCA), describing it as a landmark development for player representation in Sri Lanka.
The WCA said the establishment of the new association would support the continued professionalisation and growth of Sri Lankan cricket while giving players a collective voice as the game evolves.
The SLPCA was recently launched by Sri Lanka’s professional cricketers, with men’s white-ball captain Kusal Mendis named its inaugural President.
WCA CEO Tom Moffat congratulated the Sri Lankan players on forming the association, saying strong player representation and a strong game go hand in hand.
“Cricket thrives when players have a genuine voice in its future, and by coming together with a unified voice, the Sri Lankan players have demonstrated a deep commitment to the long-term health, integrity and professional progression of the game,” Moffat said.
He described Sri Lanka as “one of cricket’s great nations” and said the establishment of the SLPCA reflected the direction modern professional sport has taken around the world.
The WCA also noted that the Sri Lankan association follows the recent establishment of the US Cricketers’ Association.
With the latest developments, players from 17 of the world’s top 19 cricket countries are now affiliated with the WCA.
The global body has a representative presence across 17 leading cricket nations, with more than 750 current international players participating in its Global Player Rights Program. (Newswire)
