Sri Lankan batsman Duleep Mendis is carried off after being hit on forehead by Jeff Thomson during Australia vs Sri Lanka at The Oval, London in 1975 World Cup. Sunil Wettimuny was also hospitalised after being hit in the ribs & a broken foot by Thomson. KMT Perera, the Sri Lankan manager argued Thomson should’ve been warned as “they (Sri Lanka) were only part timers & they play for the love of the game.” The Australian manager Fred Bennett replied “What do you want him to do? Bowl underarm?” Upon arrival at the hospital, the medical forms listed the injury cause simply as “hit by Thomson.” A police officer unaware of the cricket context, took it literally & asked Mendis if he wanted to “press charges for assault”
