53 Years Ago Today ‘Greatest Rock Band Of All Time’ Released its Debut Album

On this day, 53 years ago, the “greatest rock band of all time” released their debut album and changed the music landscape forever.

July 13 is a significant date in music history. Forty-one years ago today, the legendary Live Aid concert was held at London’s Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium.

Seventy years ago today, a 20-year-old phenom named Elvis Presley released two future hit songs, “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog”, just 11 days after recording both tracks in New York City.

On July 13, 1973, rock music experienced another historic moment when Queen released its first album. The self-titled album was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Studios, both in London.

The album featured 10 tracks, headlined by three hits in “Keep Yourself Alive”, “Liar” and a short instrumental version of “Seven Seas of Rhye.”

Anchored by Freddie Mercury’s excellent vocal range and Brian May’s command of the guitar, Queen soon emerged as one of the world’s hottest music acts. The band released its second album, Queen II, in March 1974.

More than fifty years later, the band’s popularity hasn’t waned in the slightest. In a 2022 British fan poll, Queen was voted the greatest rock band ever.
