These days coaches often scream instructions from the boundary rope and captain the side from outside the field. Cricket, however, is a game that develops thinkers and decision makers. Captains must learn to read situations, trust their instincts and make calls under pressure. Otherwise, the system will never produce another Mahela Jayawardene, a captain whose cricket brain was often three steps ahead of the opposition.
