American Idol host Ryan Seacrest crowned Hannah Harper the show’s 2026 winner during the season finale on Monday night (May 11). The Missouri-born singer’s victory makes her the first female country artist to win the competition show since judge Carrie Underwood’s win more than two decades ago.
Harper made a strong impression on judges Underwood, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie when she auditioned for the show with an emotional original ballad. Harper, a mother of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, wore a homemade dress and boots as she shared a vulnerable story about her experience overcoming postpartum depression. Underwood cried as Harper performed “String Cheese,” which went viral and garnered reactions from other country artists and moms across social media platforms.
During her audition and throughout the season, judges have likened Harper’s voice to Kacey Musgraves, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton and other powerhouse artists. She went on to deliver memorable performances throughout the season, including recent duets with 2006 Idol contestant Kellie Pickler, and her own idol, Lee Ann Womack, plus a reprise of “String Cheese.” Harper kicked off the star-studded season finale with fellow Top 3 finalists Jordan McCullough and Keyla Richardson, performing Underwood’s “The Champion.”
Underwood, hailing from Checotah, Oklahoma, launched her career when she won American Idol’s fourth season in 2005. She returned as a judge last year, marking 20 years since her career-launching victory. Since then, Underwood has relived steps of her journey, including in the nostalgic Idol To Icon online series, taking the stage with songs she performed on the show, reprising some of her unforgettable fashion moments, reuniting with two of the original judges, and more.
