Filipino singer Kristel Herrera gets standing ovation at ‘Britain’s Got Talent’

Another Filipina singer made a strong impression on the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage, as “Little Big Star” alumna Kristel Herrera received a standing ovation from the judges after her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Run to You.”

Herrera shyly admitted that she wanted to sing for King Charles on “Britain’s Got Talent” season 19’s April 5 broadcast before delivering a powerful performance of the Whitney Houston classic.

“My biggest dream is to perform in front of the King. I feel like today is my big day,” she said, adding that she was joined by her husband, who watched in the audience.

After Herrera’s performance, the judges praised her for a “sensational performance,” with many of them giving high points for her technique.

“Honestly, like that was unbelievable. I mean, your husband must be on the moon. Being able to hear that every day of his life. I wanna see more,” KSI said.

Meanwhile, Amanda Holden pointed out that Herrera seemed “little” when she first stepped onstage but quickly broke out of her shell as soon as she began singing.

“I am blown away by that entire performance. What I’m finding extraordinary is how sort of little and shrunk you are, but when you sang, you turned into a complete diva, baby!” she said.

The “Little Big Star” contestant received four “yeses” before advancing to the next round.

Herrera has been singing since she was nine, and joined the first season of singing competition “Little Big Star” in 2005, competing with Jake Zyrus (then known as Charice Pempengco) and Sam Concepcion, who were her batchmates on the show. She, however, only advanced to the Wildcard round.

The singer is currently based in West Yorkshire, a county in England’s Yorkshire and the Humber region. She now works as a theater actress, where she recently starred in local productions of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Robin Hood.”

Herrera continues the streak of Filipino singing competition alums earning recognition on the global stage. Last March, “Idol Philippines” alum Matty Juniosa received the coveted Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell for his rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” /edv
