Can NWU handle Tuks’ all-court game

STAT ATTACK: Tuks will go into the Varsity Cup Final against the NWU Eagles with a slight tactical advantage.

The Varsity Cup will reach a climax on Monday evening, when Tuks host the NWU Eagles in Pretoria.

Tuks could become the most successful team in Varsity Cup history if they win the decider.

As things stand, Tuks and Maties have won five titles apiece since the competition’s inception in 2008.

Meanwhile, the NWU Eagles will be gunning for their first title since 2023.

While both teams have featured prominently across a tournament that has prioritised attack, it remains to be seen whether Monday’s Final will be played in the same “you score, I score” spirit.

With both sides boasting an array of set-piece, kicking and defensive strengths, the contest in Pretoria may be a lot cagier than most expect.

Speak to the respective Varsity Cup coaches, and they will tell you how significant home advantage has been over the course of this year’s competition.

Tuks Stadium at the University of Pretoria has become a fortress, while many visiting players have struggled to cope with the hostile reception at the Fanie du Toit Sport Grounds at NWU.

Neither Tuks nor the Eagles have lost a home game this season.

Tuks will enjoy home advantage this Monday, but may recall what transpired when these teams last met during the league phase.

The Eagles claimed a 30-22 win in Potchefstroom – and consigned Tuks to their one and only loss of the regular season.

For that reason, the Eagles will believe that victory is possible this Monday.

Tuks and the Eagles have certainly contributed to the Varsity Cup’s attacking product this season, having averaged the most tries and points scored.

And yet, when one digs a bit deeper into the numbers, it becomes clear why they are in the Final and why others like UCT and the Shimlas are not.

Tuks have conceded the fewest tries on average (3.4), followed by Maties (3.8) and the Eagles (4.4).

Every other side in the eight-team competition has leaked five tries or more per match.

Furthermore, Tuks have conceded the fewest points on average (24) and have leaked 30 on just two occasions this season.

The average scoreline in the five games staged in Pretoria this season reads 46-23 in Tuks’ favour.
