The Glasgow Commonwealth Games have drawn to a close with a colourful closing ceremony at OVO Hydro, where hours before the Silver Ferns took netball gold over Jamaica.
New Zealand finished the event with 10 gold medals, 14 silver and 12 bronze, and a sixth place on the medal table behind Australia, England, Canada, India and hosts Scotland.
While the tally fell short of the 20 gold at Birmingham four years ago, or 58 medals at Auckland 1990, these ‘re-imagined’ Games featured half as many sports as Birmingham and the least number of medal events in almost 30 years.
The NZ team were exactly half the number of that at Auckland.
Though the past four years have placed the future of the Games in doubt, the next are already locked in for Ahmedabad 2030 in India.
Beyond that, New Zealand is exploring a possible hosting bid.
