Robert P Senanayake was a remarkable Sri Lankan businessman, sports administrator, philanthropist, and member of one of the country’s most influential political families. While his elder brother Dudley Senanayake became one of Sri Lanka’s best known political figures and served as Prime Minister, Robert chose a quieter path. Robert was the younger son of the respected statesman D S Senanayake. From his school days, Robert demonstrated a strong passion for cricket. He was a talented cricketer at St Thomas College, Mount Lavinia, and continued playing the sport during his studies at Cambridge University in England. His abilities were good enough for him to earn the rare distinction of playing in the Cambridge Freshman’s match. He was also invited to the University nets, an honour that reflected the high regard in which his cricketing ability was held.

He later became President of the Cricket Board and devoted almost two decades to helping guide the development of the sport in Sri Lanka. During his period of leadership, Sri Lankan cricket made significant progress on the international stage. One of the important achievements during this era was Sri Lanka becoming an associate member of the International Cricket Council.
Robert also used his many international contacts to help bring foreign cricket teams to Sri Lanka. These visits provided valuable opportunities for local cricketers and contributed to the growth of the sport. His contribution was remembered through the Robert Senanayake Inter Association Tournament, which was named in his honour.
His interests extended beyond cricket. Robert was also a Steward of the Ceylon Turf Club and enjoyed a number of activities during his private life. He had a particular love for wildlife and frequently travelled to nature reserves. Like his brother Dudley, he was an accomplished photographer and carefully photographed wildlife while exploring less travelled areas. He also enjoyed golf and bridge, spending time with friends away from his demanding professional responsibilities.
Robert’s personal life was closely connected with his wife Neela, the daughter of the late F R Senanayake. After returning to Sri Lanka following his studies at Cambridge, he fell in love with Neela and married her. Their marriage was described as a deeply devoted partnership. They were known for their warmth and hospitality, and their home was open to friends who could visit at almost any time.
The loss of Neela later became one of the most painful experiences of Robert’s life. Her death left him deeply affected, and those who knew him described the loss as something from which he never fully recovered. Despite this personal tragedy, his reputation for kindness and generosity continued to grow.
Robert’s business career was equally impressive. He established himself as a successful businessman rather than relying simply on the prominence of his family. Together with Martin Sturcken, he acquired Freudenburg and Company and expanded its operations by adding several important agencies and business interests.
Among the companies and agencies associated with his business activities were Hapag Lloyd and Toyota. He was also involved in Freudenburg Shipping Company, which became the first Sri Lankan shipping company to purchase a ship from a Greek shipping tycoon. The vessel was named Mahanuwara, reflecting the company’s growing ambitions in the shipping industry.
Robert was also the founder of Ceylon and World Tours and served on the boards of major companies including Ceylon Theatres and Millers. His business career demonstrated his ability to build and manage enterprises while maintaining a reputation for integrity and professionalism.
Yet perhaps one of the most memorable aspects of Robert’s character was his generosity. People who approached him during difficult times often found someone willing to listen and help. He was known for having a patient ear and offering support to those who were struggling.
One story illustrates this generosity particularly well. A supporter connected with the Dedigama electorate had an old Toyota lorry that had remained in a workshop for years without being properly repaired. When the matter was brought to Robert’s attention, he listened patiently and asked the people involved to return the following day. Instead of simply trying to resolve the old vehicle’s problems, Robert decided to give the man a brand new Toyota chassis, which at the time was worth around four hundred thousand rupees. Such a gesture reflected the extraordinary generosity for which he became known.
Robert also assisted with political work connected to his brother Dudley. While Dudley travelled around the country leading political campaigns, Robert often worked quietly behind the scenes. He looked after matters connected with the estates they shared and attended to the needs of people in Dudley’s Dedigama electorate. His contribution was therefore not always visible to the public, but it helped support his brother’s demanding political career.
Despite being the son and brother of Prime Ministers, Robert did not use his position to make himself prominent. He was described as unpretentious and uncomfortable with displaying his influence. He preferred to work quietly rather than seek attention, and this humility became one of the qualities for which he was most respected.
Robert was also known for his spiritual life. He was a deeply devoted Buddhist and regarded spirituality as an important part of his everyday life. His faith was accompanied by a strong belief in tolerance, compassion, and helping others.
Robert P Senanayake’s life therefore represents a different kind of public service. He was not the politician standing at the centre of a political stage, but the businessman working behind the scenes. He was not only a sports administrator but also someone who genuinely loved cricket. He was not simply a wealthy member of a powerful family, but a man remembered for generosity towards people who came to him in need.
His legacy rests on qualities that are often difficult to measure, including humility, integrity, patience, kindness, hard work, and loyalty to family and friends. Although his brother Dudley became the more famous public figure, Robert’s own contribution to Sri Lanka’s business world, cricket, and society was significant.
Robert Senanayake will therefore be remembered as the quiet strength behind his famous brother, but also as a remarkable individual in his own right. His story reminds us that influence does not always come from standing in the spotlight. Sometimes it comes from working quietly, helping others, building institutions, supporting loved ones, and leaving behind a reputation for goodness that continues long after a life has ended.
