No 12 seed Qinwen Zheng defeated unseeded Oceane Dodin 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Monday night. Zheng needed only 59 minutes to secure a place in the last eight for a second consecutive Grand Slam.
The 21-year-old from China also made it to the quarters of the 2022 US Open, where her run came to an end at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka.
“I’m happy to reach the quarter-finals,” Zheng said after beating Dodin. “Second time, I have more experience. I’m just trying to tell myself to focus on the moment and don’t think too much.”
Zheng, ranked No 15, will play Russian Anna Kalinskaya on Wednesday. She preceded Monday’s result by taking out Ashlyn Krueger (3-6, 6-2, 6-3), Katie Boulter (6-3, 6-3) and Yafan Wang (6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8)) earlier in the tournament.
Dodin, ranked No 95, enjoyed her best Grand Slam run with victories over China’s Lin Zhu, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-3), Italian Martina Trevisan (6-4, 6-4) and Clara Burel (6-2, 6-4).
