“Young but mature mindset”: Tim Southee hails New Zealand’s gifted player

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee has lauded young batter Rachin Ravindra, calling him a “gifted” player with a great work ethic. Southee highlighted Ravindra’s dedication to improve his game and his ability to play like an experienced cricketer despite being 25 years old.

Ravindra played a match-winning knock of 108 runs in the Champions Trophy semi-final against South Africa. His brilliant innings helped New Zealand secure a place in the final against India on March 9. It was his second century of the tournament, proving his rising status in world cricket.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Southee, who captained Ravindra in ODIs before retiring, explained how the youngster’s hunger to learn makes him special.

“He’s still young, but he has a mature mindset. If Kane Williamson hadn’t been slightly unfit due to his knee injury during the One-Day World Cup last year, Ravindra might not have gotten his chance. But everything happens for a reason. He is always eager to learn, constantly seeking advice from experienced players like Williamson. For a young player, his willingness to improve stands out,” Southee said.

Southee also praised Ravindra’s hard work and natural talent. “There’s no doubt that he’s naturally gifted, but he also puts in a lot of hard work. He is elegant to watch and has a smooth batting style. His talent is remarkable… If you see him bat, you’d think he has been playing international cricket for years.,” he added.
