Roger Federer is one of the greatest players to ever swing a tennis racket and managed to stack up 20 Grand Slam crowns during his time as a star of the game.
The Swiss star was poetry in motion out on the tennis court, with the sweatband he often wore around his head made redundant during most of the matches he played in his prime.
Playing against Federer was often deemed the pinnacle of some lesser players’ careers, with the legendary figure possessing a certain sort of aura when it came to gracing a tennis court.
Wimbledon was where Federer truly stamped down his authority over the other legendary players in the game, with eight titles coming his way over the years – a record when it comes to the men’s game.
Centre Court was where he so often proved an immovable object, and in 2016, a Great Britain player was handed the thankless task of trying to get the better of Federer on the famous Wimbledon court.
What Marcus Willis said about Roger Federer after playing him at Wimbledon
The Great British player entered Wimbledon in 2016 through the back door, playing three qualifying matches to get into the main draw and try to make a name for himself.
After beating Ricardo Berankis in round one, Federer was waiting for him in the second round, with Centre Court chosen for the David vs Goliath contest of the tennis world.
Naturally, the game went true to form with Federer winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, progressing all the way to the semi-final before losing to Canadian player Milos Raonic.
After the match, Willis opened up on facing Federer and said: “I could go on all day. He makes you feel like you’ve got no time. He puts a lot of balls on the court in big points. You can’t leave the ball anywhere short or high. It’s just gone.
