The prodigious 17-year-old turned the tables with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the final, marking her second singles triumph in an already impressive career. The young Russian sensation pocketed the hefty $1.12 million (£869,000) winner’s cheque at Indian Wells, hot on the heels of her victory at the Dubai Championships.
Andreeva’s triumph has catapulted her to the world No.6 spot, and according to the WTA, she has raked in a huge $4.93M (£3.8m) so far in her career, outpacing British tennis ace Emma Raducanu. Yet, Andreeva can’t lay hands on her earnings just yet – she’s got to wait until she hits 18.
Last month, when quizzed about her spending plans for the Dubai winnings, Andreeva said: “All questions to my dad. It all goes on his credit card because I don’t have my own yet. I cannot have my own bank account because I’m not 18.
“I’m hoping that he will leave me some to spend somewhere, to buy chips and Coke,” she joked. “Yeah, I don’t know. I’m going to ask him.”
Her Indian Wells success nudged Andreeva just ahead of Raducanu in terms of career prize money, with the latter having bagged $4.71M (£3.63m) – $220,000 shy of the new world No. 6. Despite bowing out early at Indian Wells, former US Open champion Raducanu is looking forward to brighter prospects, especially after recently joining forces with a new coach just before the event.
