Rohit Sharma’s Test Career is Over as BCCI identifies New Captain

India’s decision to keep Jasprit Bumrah out of the Champions Trophy 2025 was largely due to his role as the likely future Test captain. BCCI chairman Ajit Agarkar had to decide after the National Cricket Academy (NCA) cleared Bumrah medically, though he had yet to bowl at full intensity. With the tournament approaching, the selectors chose caution, prioritizing Bumrah’s long-term future.

Bumrah’s leadership prospects were a key factor in the decision. Bumrah has captained India in three Tests to date, stepping in whenever Rohit was unavailable. The first instance came in the fifth and final Test against England in Birmingham in 2022 when Rohit was sidelined due to COVID-19. Although India lost that match, Bumrah displayed promising leadership qualities.

His next opportunity came during India’s tour of Australia later that year when Rohit was delayed due to the birth of his second child. In his absence, Bumrah led India to victory in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, which turned out to be the only win for India in what was a disappointing series.

“The key issue appears to be that Bumrah has not yet resumed full-intensity bowling, and experts believe it would be challenging for him to get match-fit in such a brief period.”

“Instead, he could make his comeback with Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England, as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be selected for Tests again,” PTI reported.

Rohit Sharma has struggled in Tests, particularly in 2024, averaging under 25 and scoring several single-digit innings. India also lost all six Tests under his leadership between late 2024 and early 2025, including a whitewash at home to New Zealand and a disappointing series in Australia. With Rohit turning 38 in April and his form dipping, the selectors are focusing on Bumrah as the long-term option.
