South Africa’s women’s cricket team is banking on new energy for their upcoming ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka. The Proteas have named a 15-member squad that mixes youth with experience, setting the tone for a critical year in women’s cricket.
The tri-series will take place in Colombo from April 27 to May 11. It will feature South Africa, India, and hosts Sri Lanka, each playing the others twice before a final showdown. This is South Africa’s first tour to Sri Lanka since 2017.
Three players have received their maiden ODI call-ups. Wicketkeeper Karabo Meso, spinner Seshnie Naidu, and all-rounder Miané Smit have impressed selectors with strong domestic and U19 World Cup performances. All three represent the future of South African cricket.
Meso and Naidu were part of the squad during the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Smit, meanwhile, traveled with the senior team as a reserve during the T20 World Cup in 2023. This series gives them a chance to finally make their debuts in South African colors.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi believes this is the right moment to bring new talent into the fold. He said young players must be tested in real match conditions to prepare for global events. With the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup just months away, the timing couldn’t be better.
Veteran Marizanne Kapp will miss the tri-series. She is focusing on her fitness program and will return later in the season. In her absence, the likes of Ayabonga Khaka and Laura Wolvaardt will play key leadership roles.
Nondumiso Shangase also returns to the squad. She hasn’t played since the 2023 tour of India. Her inclusion strengthens the bowling department, especially on slow Sri Lankan pitches.
All matches will be held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With subcontinental conditions similar to those expected in India for the World Cup, the series offers ideal preparation for the Proteas.
South Africa is not just playing for a trophy. They’re building something bigger. The world will be watching.
