Sri Lanka finished Day 1 with a commanding 61-run lead over Bangladesh in the second three-day U17 match, driven by a superb century from Rehan Peiris at the Bashundhara Sports City Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
Bangladesh, who won the toss and opted to bat first, struggled from the outset. Opener Md Sami was bowled in the first over by Gimhan Mendis, setting the tone for a difficult innings. Wicketkeeper-batter Kawser Ahmed (21) and Sk Jarif Siyam (15) built a brief partnership of 31 runs, but fell in quick succession, both bowled by Manitha Rajapaksa.
The middle order offered little resistance, with Lawrence Roy (1), captain Adrito (10), Md Rakibul Hossain (15) and Junayed Hossain (3) all failing to convert starts. Coming at no. 8, Sourav Karmaker fought back with a composed 42 off 60 balls, but Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for just 122. Minuga Nethsara, Himaru Deshan and Manitha Rajapaksa each claimed three wickets for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s reply started shakily as Akash trapped opener Arosha Sithumina LBW with the first ball of the innings. However, a 70-run stand between Rehan Peiris and Hirun Matheesha (18) steadied the visitors. Rakibul removed Matheesha, but Peiris continued unfazed, reaching an unbeaten 114 by stumps, supported by Jason Fernando, who finished on 51.
Sri Lanka closed the day strongly at 183/2, tightening their grip on the match. Bangladesh will need early breakthroughs on Day 2 to fight their way back. The young Tigers lead the two-match series 1–0 after their victory in Mirpur.
