The focus now shifts to the weekend’s fixtures when City travel to Leicester on Sunday. Al Jazeera will bring you live updates from that game, which will kick off at 14:30 GMT.

More reaction from Akanji

Asked if City, who are now sixth, can still defend the title, Akanji said, “The season is not finished but that’s not our target. We need to focus game by game.”

City next play away to Leicester City on Sunday. The Foxes are 17th in the table with a game in hand.

“Leicester away won’t be easy now with the shape we’re in,” Akanji added.

Akanji reflects on frustrating draw for Man City

City defender Akanji, speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, said his side should have won the game.

Asked if the draw was a fair result, he said: “I don’t think so, no. We did way more for the game, created lots of chances and conceded a goal out of nothing. But that’s how it is.

“We could’ve scored three or four goals but the ball didn’t want to go in,” he added.

“I’ll be honest with you: It can’t happen that we nearly lose the game in the last minute. We’re trying to attack but then we lose the ball and it was like a six versus two situation,” he said, referring to the counterattack by Everton in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

“Luckily I blocked the shot. Things like this can’t happen.”

Recap: Suffering continues for Man City with a 1-1 league draw with Everton

Bernardo Silva scored an early goal but struggling Manchester City could only muster a single point in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Everton to kick off a full slate of Boxing Day games on Thursday.

City’s slump has seen them win just once in their last 13 matches across all competitions and they provisionally sit sixth in the table with 28 points, 11 below leaders Liverpool who have two games in hand. Everton are 15th, five points above the drop zone.

Silva scored in the 14th minute when Jeremy Doku played a ball in behind the Toffees’ defence and Silva slid in to fire into the far corner from a tight angle. But Iliman Ndiaye drew Everton level in the 36th when he took a touch to settle the ball, then unleashed a shot from the centre of the box to the top right corner.

City fans thought they had victory locked up when Erling Haaland stepped up to the penalty spot in the second half after Seamus Coleman’s tackle on Savinho, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dived correctly to save the shot. Haaland headed home the rebound, but it was chalked off for offside.

What does the draw mean for both sides?

City have temporarily climbed one spot up to sixth in the league standings ahead of the other Boxing Day fixtures in the Premier League.

The reigning champions, who are on a four-game winless streak in the league, have 28 points from 18 games.

Everton, unbeaten in their last four league games, remain 15th with 17 points from 17 games.
