Luke Saville reveals who can challenge Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have reshaped the men’s game. Theo two great rivals have claimed all seven Major titles since the start of 2024, while leaving their opponents scrambling to keep up.

Their consistency, power and adaptability across all surfaces have created a clear gap in men’s tennis – one that few seem capable of bridging. The former pro, Luke Saville, reflected on the changing landscape.

Like many others, the Aussie believes Joao Fonseca could be the one to challenge the reigning duo in the future. The 18-year-old enjoyed solid runs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, becoming the first player born in 2006 to crack the top-50.

Fonseca has already turned heads with his explosive game and fearless attitude, drawing comparisons to tennis greats. The young Brazilian claimed his first ATP title in Buenos Aires in February, becoming one of the youngest ATP champions since 1990.

The other results this season were not that good, but Joao will use them as the learning curve for the future. A teenager has proved his quality at Majors this season.

Joao qualified for the Australian Open and stunned the top-10 star Andrey Rublev in the first round. Fonseca made impressive debuts in Paris and London, becoming the youngest player to reach the third round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon since Andy Roddick in 2001.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas ad Alexander Zverev were once projected to lead the post-Big 3 era. Despite reaching more than ten Major finals, they have won only one title at the 2021 US Open.

Zverev is still ranked in the top-3, but he struggles to keep up the pace with the rivals from the top. As Alcaraz and Sinner continue to pull away, all eyes turn to Joao Fonseca as a potential future force capable of altering the current hierarchy.

“I think everyone sees Joao Fonseca as the next challenger to Carlos and Jannik, who have created the gap to the rivals behind them. Years ago, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev were the three players everyone saw taking the lead.

Alexander has reached Major finals, but he still waits for that first title,” Luke Saville said.
