During the 2025 season, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner contested the final three majors of the year. At this week’s Nitto ATP Finals, the two are each a win away from setting another championship showdown at a noteworthy tournament.
One place, at least for now, where ‘Sincaraz’ won’t clash: the Davis Cup Finals.
While Bologna is hosting, Sinner was not on the list of last month’s roster nominations. The San Candido native led his nation to back-to-back titles the past two years in Malaga, but believes more changes are needed to encourage consistent participation with an event that was once built on home-and-away ties.
“I think playing with this schedule, Davis Cup, it’s difficult that you have every year from every country the best players in the world,” he began when asked for his thoughts following Friday’s round-robin win over Ben Shelton.
“What I would like, what I could see potentially in the future, is having Davis Cup throughout two years, so you can also set up the semifinals in the beginning of the year and the final in the end of the year somewhere.
“You can set up big matches with great venues. It makes it even bigger.”
Alcaraz, slated to headline a squad captained by David Ferrer, shared a similiar sentiment the previous day when the subject came up.
“I agree that they got to do something in this event, because I think playing every year, it is not as good as it might be if you’re playing every two or three years,” he said Thursday after finishing undefeated in the Jimmy Connors Group.
“I think if the tournament is played like every two years or every three years, the players, the commitment of the players, it’s going to be even more because it’s unique, it’s different. You’re not able to play every year.”
