Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has criticized Shubman Gill‘s recent performances in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where the young batter struggled with the bat. Gilchrist pointed out that Gill should focus on delivering big scores rather than trying to gain attention with his hairstyle. The 53-year-old quipped that Gill’s hair only looks impressive after scoring centuries and taking off his helmet.
Gill accumulated a total of 93 runs over five innings, achieving an average of 18.60. Reflecting on his performance, Gilchrist commented, “I was considering rating him a three, but I’d give him a 4 out of 10. I believe no cricketer looks good with their hair after removing their helmet.”
While acknowledging Gill’s hair, Gilchrist made it clear that the young cricketer needed to focus more on improving his batting.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan also expressed frustration with Gill’s inconsistency, urging him to make the most of his talent and score bigger runs. Vaughan expressed, “I’d give him a 4 out of 10. He [Shubman Gill] just bothers me. He’s got to get bigger scores. He’s one of the wonderful, the elegant one as we call him.”
Since his 110-run innings against Bangladesh in December 2022, Gill has struggled to score a half-century away from home in his last 16 innings.
On a more positive note, both Gilchrist and Vaughan praised Ravindra Jadeja’s contributions during the series. Gilchrist described Jadeja as “plucky” and “good,” awarding him a score of 7.5 or 8/10. Vaughan also commended the Indian all-rounder, saying, “I think he’s a brilliant cricketer. 7.5/10, he always contributes.” Jadeja played a key role in India’s performances, scoring 135 runs in five innings at an average of 27, including a vital half-century. His 77 in Brisbane helped India avoid a follow-on, while his bowling saw him take four wickets in the fourth Test.
