Dakota Johnson Details “Painful” Aspects of Growing Up With Her Famous Parents

Dakota Johnson is OK with being the child of movie stars.

However, the Materialists actress—whose parents are Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson—opened up about the downsides that come with being raised in Hollywood.

“When I was little, there were times when it was really quite scary,” she told Vogue Germany in an interview published Oct. 21, “and people would aggressively and physically try to get to my mom when we were just going to the supermarket or something.”

“If you accept that as normal as a little kid,” Dakota—who was also raised by stepdad Antonio Banderas, who was married to her mom from 1996 until 2015—added, “it can lead to a lot of complexes.”

The 36-year-old went on to call attention to the spotlight on her personal life as a result of being born into a family of famous actors.

“And then, of course, the fact that you’re in the public eye and the world knows about your private life in a way that’s very invasive, rude, and painful,” she shared. “So, yes, there are downsides, but there are also incredible upsides—like with everything, I think.”

The Madame Web star was also well aware of the fact that there were aspects of her family life—which also included Melanie and Antonio’s daughter Stella Banderas, 29, Melanie’s son Alexander Griffith, 40, with Steven Bauer, Don’s son Jesse Johnson, 42, with Patti Arbanville, and his children Atherton Grace, 25, Jasper Breckenridge, 23, and Deacon James, 19, with current wife Kelley Phleger—that were fundamentally different from her peers.

“I grew up on set and was always surrounded by people who made movies,” she explained. “I mean, I was born in Texas because my dad worked there, so I always knew that my family’s profession was different than, say, my schoolmates whose moms went to the office every day.”

Dakota recalled being “on the road so much” with her family growing up, but noted that it wasn’t a factor she had a problem with, either.

“I always just accepted it,” she said. “This is what we do. It’s in our blood.”
