‘Criticism he is getting is incredibly harsh and unfair’: Will Pucovski lends support to Cameron Green

Former Australia batter Will Pucovski defended compatriot Cameron Green for the criticism that he is getting in the ongoing Ashes series. Green has had forgettable Ashes series thus far, having scored just 118 runs across the first 4 Tests which has brought on criticism. Pucovski, however, feels that Green is just 26 and is still learning, adding that he has shown glimpses of form in the series.

“I wanted to put cam Green in a bit of a context. I think the criticism he is getting is incredibly harsh and unfair. I think it’s probably fair to say Ben Stokes is the gold standard for bowling or fast bowling allrounders in the world. Cam, Green and Ben Stokes after 28 Test matches: Cam Green has a better batting average than him, slightly and his bowling average is slightly worse but fairly comparable,” Pucovski said on 7Cricket.

“Those with a keen eye would know Cam Green’s played 36 test matches so that’s not a fair comparison. But those last 8 matches, again put into the context of what’s been happening. One was that WTC final where he missed out twice in pretty tough conditions. Then he played 3 Tests in the West Indies where he batted at No. 3. I think a part of this was the fact that it was on in the middle of the night and hard for people to keep track of. Those pitches were bloody tough work. Taking the batting average and run count of batters who batted in the top 4 in that series, King was the leader for the Windies in that series and the rest of the WI top 4 barely averaged 10. So Cam Green’s level with potentially our greatest ever batsman there (Steve Smith averaged 31.75 while Green was 30.67), averaging roughly 30 and he was very, very good in that series. That was a massive tick,” he continued.
