Kevin Federline says he remembers when he drew the line with ex Britney Spears.
In the former professional dancer’s new memoir You Thought You Knew, set to release Oct. 21, he alleged the first crack in his three-year marriage with the “Circus” singer came during a fight about her apparent drug use at the release party for his 2006 album Playing With Fire.
“The first thing I saw was Britney and her young starlet friend snorting a fat line of coke off the table,” Kevin—who says Britney was still breastfeeding their kids Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, now 19, at the time—wrote in the book. “It was surreal. They didn’t even try to hide it.”
And while the 47-year-old says he wasn’t fazed by his then-wife’s drug use, he noted, “what was hitting me in that moment was everything else, what this meant for the kids.”
Indeed, Kevin admitted that he was fuming because he says he and Britney, now 43, did not have formula to give their kids, and he assumed she was going to go home and breastfeed while drugs were still in her system.
“It was really upsetting because of the danger to the kids,” he wrote. “I had already asked her to stop doing that. I wasn’t upset that she was there; if she wanted to support me, I’d have been good with that. We could have prepared. She could have pumped milk for Jayden so her mom had that ready. But the way she was that night had nothing to do with us; it was something else entirely.”
Later in the night, Kevin said he attempted to privately confront Britney about the internal spiral he was experiencing, though their exchange quickly grew heated.
“I said, ‘Please don’t go home and breastfeed the kids like this. Call your mom or someone. We need to get formula. You can’t do this,’” Kevin recalled. “Man, the look she gave me. The instant rage in her eyes. Like she wanted to slap the shit out of me. Instead, she stood up, took her drink, and threw it straight into my face. In front of everyone. My family, my best friends, the whole damn table. I was in all-white. And she soaked me with a vodka cranberry.”
Afterward, Kevin said that the Crossroads star immediately left the party following the confrontation, adding, “She stormed off with her crew, leaving me there, humiliated and pissed; but more than anything, worried.”
Looking back, Kevin called the altercation “the beginning of the end” in their relationship, as the couple went on to separate, finalizing their divorce in 2007.
“That was the proverbial final straw, the breastfeeding thing. Her reaction,” he explained. “That’s what ended us. Was that the only thing? Or was it all the little things piling up? I don’t know, but in that moment, it was like the world collapsed.”
E! News has reached out to Britney’s rep for comment, but has not yet heard back.
Britney has not directly addressed Kevin’s allegation about the party, but amid coverage of his memoir, Britney said “those white lies in that book, they are going straight to the bank and I am the only one who genuinely gets hurt here.”
“I will always love them and if you really know me, you won’t pay attention to the tabloids of my mental health and drinking,” she wrote of her sons in an Oct. 16 post to X. “I am actually a pretty intelligent woman who has been trying to live a sacred and private life the past 5 years. I speak on this because I have had enough and any real woman would do the same.”
