Australian teen Gout’s record run earns Bolt comparison

The 16-year-old Gout on Saturday (7 December) broke Peter Norman’s half-lap record that stood for 56 years.

The 16-year-old Gout became the second fastest under-18 sprinter over the half-lap sprint in the process clocking a senior Australian and Oceania record of 20.04 seconds. He chopped 0.02s off the record Norman set to win the silver medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

Gout moved into second place behind US athlete Erriyon Knighton on the under-18 all-time list. Knighton set a blistering world record of 19.84s as a 17-year-old in 2021.

Gout’s 200m run of 20.04 seconds in the final of this year’s Australian All Schools Championships was historic on a number of levels. Firstly, he became the fastest Australian 200m runner of all time, beating Peter Norman’s national record of 20.06 seconds set all the way back at the Olympic Games Mexico City 1968
