Gautam Gambhir spoke to the media before leaving for Australia for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He was asked about Ricky Ponting’s comment on Virat Kohli’s place in Team India. Ponting had said that a player who has scored just three hundreds in the last five years doesn’t deserve to be part of the Test format in international cricket.
I saw his numbers, and there is a big concern as he has amassed just two (three) hundreds in the last five years. A player with such numbers doesn’t merit a place in the team. However, things become different when it is about Virat Kohli, as he is one of the greats of the game, and I have said in the past that top performers are not touched despite their rough patch. I hope he scores runs in Australia as he loves playing against them,” Ricky Ponting said on the ICC Podcast.
Gambhir refuses to give importance to Ricky’s words. “What does Ricky Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? He should be talking about Australia. Look, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still passionate about the game, and they want to achieve more. They are hungry for success and have done exceptionally well for the country over the years. Even the other players are doing a fine job, and I am sure we will improve as a group. I have no concerns regarding Virat and Rohit,” Gautam Gambhir said.
