Sanath Jayasuriya: World Cup will be his last assignment

Sanath Jayasuriya has made his decision. The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup will be his final assignment as Sri Lanka’s head coach, regardless of the result, reports the Sunday Times.
Although his contract runs beyond the tournament, Jayasuriya has no intention of continuing after the World Cup. His focus is clear and singular.
“My focus is the T20 World Cup and even though my contract runs beyond the global event, I don’t intend to hang on,” he has stated.
That clarity has sharpened everything in Sri Lanka’s preparation. The series against Pakistan and England are not routine fixtures. They are crucial building blocks for the World Cup.
“This is the best preparation we can get. We need to use it to the maximum,” Jayasuriya says, pointing to home conditions, strong opposition and the chance to finalise combinations.
Preparation under Jayasuriya has been specific and demanding. Weak areas have been identified and worked on. Training has been tailored to conditions and opposition, with clear plans for batters, fast bowlers and spinners.
Jayasuriya is also realistic about what must improve. Batting has to be better. Bowling execution, especially in key phases, needs to be sharper. Decision-making under pressure remains the biggest challenge.
He accepts the pressure that comes with a home World Cup and his final stint in charge.
This is Jayasuriya’s last lap. One tournament. One mission. Then he steps away.
