21 Years Later, Netflix Is Streaming an Action Thriller Classic Ahead of Their “Fantastic” Reboot

Netflix is all set to reboot one of the most beloved action thrillers of modern times. And it’s an action thriller led by Academy Award winner and Hollywood icon Denzel Washington and directed by the late, great Tony Scott, no less. The action thriller in question is 2004’s Man on Fire, and before we see what the streamer has in store for the reboot, the 2004 original is now due to land on Netflix in the new year.

Directed and produced by Tony Scott from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, Man on Fire is based on the 1980 novel of the same name by A. J. Quinnell. The action outing sees Denzel Washington take the lead as a deeply damaged former CIA agent and U.S. Marine turned bodyguard with Dakota Fanning as his charge. The rest of the stellar cast includes Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell, Giancarlo Giannini, Marc Anthony, Rachel Ticotin and Mickey Rourke. Man on Fire is all set to land on Netflix from January 1, 2026, and you can check out the synopsis below..

A Netflix Reboot of ‘Man on Fire’ Is Coming…

Man of Fire sees Denzel Washington reunite with director Tony Scott, with the pair having also delivered other thrilling cinematic wonders like Crimson Tide, Deja Vu, Unstoppable, and more. While Man on Fire is looked back on by audiences as “absolutely incredible” and “One of Denzel Washington’s greatest,” it received mixed reviews from critics. The movie stands at just 39% from critics alongside 89% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating once again that the two groups don’t often see eye to eye.

Alongside Netflix landing the 2004 original, the streamer is now set to reboot Man on Fire with Candyman, Aquaman, and Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking over from Washington as John W. Creasy. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Bobby Cannavale, who is set to star alongside Abdul-Mateen II in the serial reboot, heaped praise on the “really, really fantastic actor.”
