Sports crossover of the year? Tennis G.O.A.T. Novak Djokovic was honored with a major international award this weekend—and received it from none other than soccer icon Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two legends attended the 16th edition of the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on Sunday, where Djokovic was named Globe Sportsman of the Year. The honor adds to an already historic résumé for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Ronaldo, 40, was effusive in his praise as he presented the award, drawing parallels between their careers, longevity at the top of their sports, and shared ability to overcome adversity.
“For me, he is an example,” Ronaldo said on stage. “When you have people as an example, he speaks the words coming from himself. So for me, he is an example in longevity. We have a similar story.
“So I think he deserves this because he is a great example for this generation, all generations, the generation that’s going to come.”
The Portuguese superstar also collected the award for Best Player in the Middle East, and has been open about his ambition to reach 1,000 career goals before retirement. He currently sits at 956 and counting.
Djokovic, 38, has record-breaking ambitions of his own. The Serb holds the men’s Open Era record with 24 Grand Slam titles and is chasing a historic 25th major, which would break the all-time record he currently shares with Margaret Court.
“It’s a great surprise. To be here is a privilege, and receiving an award from another sporting legend is a dream come true,” Djokovic said.
“I’m a big fan of football. I came here to celebrate the incredible year that everyone is having and I was caught off guard, in a positive way. I couldn’t be happier.
“I’m very thankful to hear these words from him and also thankful to call him a friend, and someone who really inspires me.”
