David Fincher has produced some of the greatest psychological thrillers of all time, but 30 years later, one of his biggest hits has resurfaced on streaming charts. In 1995, Fincher teamed up with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman for Se7en, a hard-boiled drama following a pair of grizzled detectives, one rookie and one veteran, who hunt down a serial killer using the seven sins as his motive. Se7en is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV in America, but globally, the film is in the top 10 on HBO Max and several countries around the world, including Belgium and France.
Se7en was met with strong critical acclaim upon its release in 1995, and the film was also a hit with the masses. It earned a certified fresh 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and with more than 250,000 verified ratings. It currently sits at a strong 95% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. This translated into success at the box office, too, where Se7en grossed a whopping $328 million globally against a modest $33 million budget. When factoring in inflation, Se7en grossed nearly $700 million at the global box office, which in 2025, would make it one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. The film also stars Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the script for Se7en, and David Fincher directed the film. Se7en is still held as one of the most famous works of Fincher’s career, but he has directed other hits such as Zodiac and The Social Network. He most recently teamed up with Michael Fassbender for the Netflix original movie The Killer, and he’s also reportedly working on a Squid Game reboot that will be set in America.
