Sri Lanka Under-19 skipper Vimath Dinsara says the upcoming Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai will be an ideal buildup for the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup. The tournament begins tomorrow (12) and continues until the 21st, while the World Cup is scheduled from January 15 to February 6 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Sri Lanka, five-time runners-up in the Asia Cup, have never won the title. Dinsara believes this is the moment to claim their maiden championship ahead of the World Cup. Sri Lanka will meet Nepal in their opening fixture on the 13th (Saturday), followed by Afghanistan on the 15th and Bangladesh on the 17th in their group stage. The team plans to train for two days before the opener to adjust to Dubai conditions.
“We have a well-balanced team. Most of us have played together for the past year, and the understanding within the group is very strong,” said Dinsara.
Sri Lanka have three players from the previous Asia Cup — Viran Chamuditha, deputy skipper Kavija Gamage, and Dinsara himself. Fast bowler Kugathas Mathulan, who also played last year, was ruled out at the last moment due to a right groin injury. He has been replaced by leg-spinner Himal Ravihansa. Mathulan is currently undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to return in time for the World Cup.
Sri Lanka will rely heavily on their strong spin attack, which is well suited for Dubai conditions. Chamuditha, Gamage, Tharusha Navodya, and Kithma Vidanapathirana are the key off-spinners, while Chamika Heenatigala, Vigneshwaran Akash, and Ravihansa form the leg-spin unit.
Most players in the squad featured in the recent series against Bangladesh and the West Indies, which Dinsara says helped build valuable experience. “Our preparation has been solid. We’ve played against emerging squads, and our recent practice matches gave us good wickets to adapt to. After the success of our last two series, I’m confident we can win this Asia Cup. But we won’t underestimate anyone,” he added.
Coach Chamara Silva: ‘Focus is clear — Asia Cup and then the World Cup’
Under-19 Head Coach Chamara Silva is equally confident as the team heads into two major tournaments.
“We need to gain as much experience as possible from this Asia Cup before the World Cup. Playing strong teams here gives us the match exposure we need. The Junior Selection Committee, led by Vinothen John, has picked the best young talent for this tour,” Silva said.
He added that Sri Lanka Cricket has provided excellent support and facilities. “Our players are eager to win, and we’re taking it match by match. Adjusting to situations and playing smart cricket will be key.”
The coaching staff includes fast-bowling coach Omesh Wijesiriwardena, spin-bowling coach Dilruwan Perera, team manager Ranjith Madurusinghe, and selector-on-tour Varuna Waragoda.
