WHAT HAPPENED: On paper No. 8 seeded Alex de Minaur was a clear cut favorite against No. 435 qualifier Leandro Riedi in their 2025 US Open fourth round matchup on Monday.
De Minaur delivered as expected, as the Australian rolled past Riedi, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, in a quick 90 minutes to open Day 9 play in Louis Armstrong Stadium to secure his third career final 8 spot at Flushing Meadows.
The Australian has reached the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slams but has never yet to make it past to a semifinal in five previous attempts. His most recent quarterfinal was at home at the Australian Open to start this year.
“I am super proud of what I have done,” de Minaur said in his on-court interview. “This is where I want to be playing for the big titles. I’ve put myself into the right situations.”
The 26-year-old de Minaur has cruised through the first four matches on the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center hard courts losing just one set.
A speedy counterpuncher from the backcourt, but also very comfortable in attacking with a crisp volley, de Minaur has been nearly unstoppable on the hard courts this year. He leads the ATP Tour with 28 hard court match wins this season, highlighted by a tournament title at Washington in July.
The upstart Swiss who led only at 1-0 in the final set never pressed de Minaur. The 23-year-old Riedi had a go for broke approach on his shots, resulting in 39 errors.
Still, de Minaur never got overconfident telling the fans, “I’m happy with my level of play and my focus. I knew he had a hell of a week getting this far and I’m just happy to be back into the quarterfinals.”
