Zverev and Fritz will be squaring off for the 13th time in their careers when they meet again in the Stuttgart final on Sunday afternoon. Fritz leads the head-to-head series 7-5 and has won four in a row against Zverev dating back to Wimbledon last summer, when the American survived a 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 thriller. He also prevailed in a fourth-set tiebreaker at the U.S. Open, in straight sets at the Laver Cup, and in a third-set ‘breaker at the Nitto ATP Finals. Zverev still leads 2-1 at Wimbledon, having picked up victories in 2018 (five sets) and 2021 (fourth-set tiebreaker).
Fritz is obviously confident in this matchup, but current form favors Zverev. That’s not to say the third-ranked German is playing great tennis by any means, but he at least won the Munich title last month, advanced to the French Open quarterfinals, and defeated an in-form Ben Shelton in straight sets on Saturday. Fritz’s 2025 campaign has been plagued by an abdominal problem. The seventh-ranked American has done well to reach his first final of the year, but the only seed he faced en route was Felix Auger-Aliassime–who is not exactly playing well these days. With home-court advantage, Zverev should be able to lift another trophy in Germany and gain at least some measure of revenge for his recent losing streak against Fritz.
