Chris Gayle welcomes new king in town after his match-winning performance against England

Former West Indies player Chris Gayle lauded the India captain Rohit Sharma for his hundred in the second ODI against England. Rohit also went past Chris Gayle on the list of most sixes in one-day internationals. The veteran batter scored 119 runs off 90 balls, laced with 12 fours and 7 sixes to go past Gayle’s number of 331 sixes. The right-handed batter is now only behind Pakistan’s great all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, who amassed 351 ODI sixes in his career.

“Congratulations to the new king in town. Sports needs an entertainer and Rohit Sharma has been doing it for years. I hope he hits more sixes,” he said.

Rohit is the only cricketer in the world to hit more than 600 sixes in international cricket. The batter has hit 631 sixes in 493 matches across formats. Gayle and Afridi struck 563 and 476 sixes in 483 and 524 matches, respectively.

Sharma needs just 13 runs to complete 11,000 ODI runs. He is likely to achieve the record in the third and final game against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

In 267 ODI, Rohit has managed 10,897 runs, including 32 tons. Sachin Tendulkar (18,426), Virat Kohli (13,911), and Sourav Ganguly (11,363) are the three Indian batters to touch the 11,000-run mark.
