The need of the hour is desperation to restoration for Sri Lanka

It is high time that Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva gets his batsman to realize that occupation of the crease is what test cricket is about and not playing one day cowboy cricket.

Getting thumped by an innings and 243 runs by Australia, thus recording their worst ever test defeat In their test cricket history, Sri Lanka go as underdogs to square the series, which looks like a herculean task for the home team.

Australia, who dominated in all three departments of the game, including all 7 sessions, will now aim for a whitewash knowing that Sri Lanka can wilt under pressure.

SriLanka, in their own backyard, looked mediocre, especially under scoreboard pressure about which coach Sanath Jayasuriya clearly conveyed his displeasure at a team meeting.

He stated that senior batters must take responsibility. These are strong words. He added that application, determination, and decipline to bat for long periods is a prerequisite to excel, especially in red ball cricket.

He asked his senior batters to add value to their wicket because that is their main asset to find a place in the squad. “Please respect your talent and don’t take your ability for granted.

It is envisaged that Pathum Nissanka will be back after his recovery from injury. Sadly, Dimuth Karunaratne will play his last test, stating his ambition to score 10,000 runs in test cricket looks far-fetched due to limitations. Hence, this is his 100th test, and he has 7172 runs in the bank . Scoring the rest requires a lot of test matches, which, unfortunately, Sri Lanka has not been facilitated in terms of ICC approved fixtures.

Chandimal has been the best , cut above the rest in this series, Mathews is showing signs of ageing to play red ball cricket, which can take its toll.

Kamindu Mendis, big question is why is he mixing up white ball execution in stroke play in red ball cricket?

DDS gets too loose at times, which he needs to address whilst Kusal Mendis, too, has the same virus similar to his name sake Kamindu.

The above views are from past cricketers that I have spoken to and not from Coutch critics.

Bowling cordon must improve. Sri Lankan spin trio were thought a lesson by world-class batters who took them to the cleaners. We also have stories going around that Ramesh Mendis might come into the flock.

Finally, the words that Sir Geoffry Boycott said must sink into Sri Lankan players, especially the senior batters. “If you take your talent for granted and don’t have discipline, and err in your application, this game will give you a kick up your bum, and tell you not to waste your time rather find another sport because you don’t belong here “.
