Jannik Sinner is hoping to begin his final season with Darren Cahill in his coaching team with a deep run at the former Aussie pro’s home Grand Slam.
In his post-match presser after defeating Tristan Schoolkate in four sets on Thursday evening in Melbourne, Sinner confirmed a report that 2025 would mark the final year of his partnership with Cahill.
“He brought me so many things,” said Sinner, when asked about Cahill and what he had added since he joined the Italian’s team, which also includes coach Simone Vagnozzi, in July 2022. “One year is still long. I don’t want to talk so much about his retirement. I feel very, very lucky and happy to be his last player on Tour. He has been an amazing, amazing coach and person, not only for me but for all the other players he has worked with.”
Sinner has surged to become No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, a two-time Grand Slam titlist and four-time ATP Masters 1000 champion since he started working with Cahill and Vagnozzi together. The Italian also triumphed at the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time in 2024, a season that he finished with a standout 73-6 record, according to the Infosys Win/Loss Index.
The 23-year-old Sinner will hope to ensure that Cahill, who has also worked with former World No. 1s Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt and Simona Halep during his coaching career, enjoys a memorable sendoff in 2025.
“For me it’s just a huge honour. Hopefully we can make a nice season,” said the Australian Open top seed, who will contest his second Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting against Marcos Giron in the third round in Melbourne. “But let’s see what’s coming in the future. He has a beautiful family, so many great things to come for him also after his tennis job. Let’s see. But the year is still long.”
